The short answer
Refinishing a bathtub costs a fraction of replacing it. The exact number depends on the tub, its size, and how much repair it needs, so every job is quoted on its own. Send photos and you get a quote that is usually accurate within about $20, or ask for a free inspection if you are within 50 miles.
Why refinishing costs less than replacing
Replacing a tub means demolition, hauling the old one out, and then dealing with the tile and plumbing around it. Refinishing skips all of that. The tub is repaired and recoated in place, so your tile, plumbing, and layout stay exactly as they are.
It is also fast. Most jobs are finished in 4 to 5 hours, and the surface is typically ready to use within 24 to 48 hours. A full tub replacement can tie up your only bathroom for days.
What changes the price
- What is being refinished. A tub, a shower pan and surround, a vanity, and a kitchen countertop are different amounts of work.
- Size. Bigger surfaces take more material and more time.
- Condition. Chips and cracks are repaired before anything is coated, so a tub with more damage takes more prep.
- Material. Porcelain, fiberglass, acrylic, and cast iron tubs can all be refinished.
Because these vary so much, be careful with any company that quotes a flat price without seeing the tub.
What a professional job includes
The coating only lasts if the prep is right. A proper job starts with a thorough clean and acid wash, then repairs any chips or cracks, applies new caulking and an epoxy primer, and finishes with a premium coating built to last 10 to 15 years. What about a DIY kit?
Kits cost less up front, and it is easy to see the appeal. The catch is that the finish is only as good as the prep underneath it, and prep is the part that is hardest to get right at home. If you are weighing it, ask how long the kit says the finish will last and compare that to 10 to 15 years.
